There is a looong thread at GDIY about Room EQ Wizard (referred to as "REW"). It seems to have matured into a full-blown testing suite for a lot more than checking speaker response. It's totally free, with the option to make a $$ donation.

I have a Dell Win XP laptop I keep so I can still use my very decent, old scanner (no driver support from HP on anything newer...another topic for another day) and TubeCAD (which is a 32 bit app). REW seems to run OK on XP, so I'm thinking of getting a Sapphire USB Interface which Ian Bell mentioned in the thread.

Seems like a "poor man's Audio-1".

I added the link to Room EQ Wizard to the original post.
I had looked at REW a long time ago and should have another look.
At the time it was acoustic-oriented.

REW does require Java to run which is pretty much a dead end for XP.
Java stopped updating on XP over a year ago and it may not have a bright future for Win 7, 8 or 10.
