THAT5263 Dual Digitally Programmable Gain Controller

Post by mediatechnology » Fri Oct 30, 2015 11:10 am

October 30, 2015. THAT Corporation, a leading provider of high-quality audio ICs, today announced the availability of the THAT5263 - a wide-range digital preamplifier controller IC intended for use with low-noise differential analog audio preamplifiers. The 5263 operates from ±5 to ±17V analog supplies, offers 3dB steps from 0 to 51dB gain, and supports input signals up to +29.6 dBu.

Bench report soon?
Come to think of it that would be fun.

Interesting timing....

Awhile back, we ended up with e Genex box with 48 mic preamp channels which are gain controlled via an "Ethernet" link into a PC app (protocol? who knows...). Main reason the box was sold was for the DSD outputs. Paul Wolfe designed the front end, but the remainder is a mystery.

We needed MADI outs for a fledgling mobile rack, but the Genex box only supports 32 MADI channels.

Soooooooo..I began looking for off-the-shelf ways to remotely wiggle the gain of a bunch of preamps located on a stage.

For your application Brian you also might look at using one of the THAT5263 (or 5171, 5173) attenuator ICs in the "switcheroo" Universal input found here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=514

It goes from +60 to -60 dB gain on one "knob" and input connector.
The DG413s are controlled by GPOs in the 5173 to make the switching seamless.
In attenuation mode the INA is a voltage follower with the 5173 attenuator after the follower.
In gain mode the 5173 attenuates feedback in the conventional topology.
With 30V supplies the input overload point is around +27 dBu so line input pads are not needed.

The THAT5173 and 5263 gain steps may be too "chunky" and a 1 dB or 0.5dB interpolator could be added to the output buffer or done in DSP.
The THAT5263 looks ideal for this circuit.
