Re: Mid Side M-S Matrix Uses No Precision Resistors

Thanks Doug. Speaking of quick morning scans here's this: https://www.ka-electronics.com/Images/jpg/M-S_Flow_Diagram.jpg https://www.ka-electronics.com/Images/jpg/M-S_Flow_Diagram.jpg This is the basic flow diagram of the combined encoder/decoder. Notice the interstage points labeled A-H. Bypass dis...

Re: Mid Side M-S Matrix Uses No Precision Resistors

Thank Paul - I'll draw us a quick picture in a little bit so we're all reading from the same page. Fortunately the scheme I'm proposing is the simplest too.

Re: VCA bus mixer using all THAT all the time

JR -

The 22 kHz BW noise performance is about the same comparing a 2162 to a 2181 around -98 at 0 dB gain.

The primary difference is THD performance with the larger-geometry parts being better.

IIRC correctly the output C was 3 pF vs. 15 pF.

Re: Mid Side M-S Matrix Uses No Precision Resistors

Roger - The half bypass system used in the Pico Compressor works fine. In that situation we don't have to maintain 0.02 dB gain accuracy. In the matrix I'm not concerned by the load of the line receiver but the load on the line driver on the insert send by the external processor. This only applies i...

Re: Mid Side M-S Matrix Uses No Precision Resistors

RF; That makes the most sense. The only downside I see to it, as opposed to completely bypassing the ahead/behind of the line driver/line receiver, is that loading of the encoder output, by the external device, reduces separation in bypass. The 25R build-out of the 1646 is very low, but 600 ohm load...

Re: Mid Side M-S Matrix Uses No Precision Resistors

Thanks everyone for your input and support. I'm still figuring out what the best bypass option is. It could be bypassed ahead of the balanced driver and receiver, taking only 2 relay poles, or it could provide bypass through the balanced I/O. In that case it could be full or half bypass taking 4 or ...

Re: Mid Side M-S Matrix Uses No Precision Resistors

I thought the universal encoder wouldn't have an output. That makes it truly universal. :D OK, so far we have simul encode/decode, balanced I/O, relay bypass, and InGenius (optional) balanced inputs for the I/O. (Still need to use 1240s for the internal stages.) Note to "self" - make sure ...

Re: VCA bus mixer using all THAT all the time

The VCA distortion will surely be uncorrelated since the individual audio inputs are all uncorrelated. Well, yeah. I guess we don't run correllated test tones in the real world. Forgot about that... I got that argument muddled with the parallel/differential VCA argument such as the GSSL folk...

Re: VCA bus mixer using all THAT all the time

I agree noise reduction isn't the only benefit. In the thread I nuked elsewhere I think I mentioned that it was silly to have so much low-noise amplification ahead of the pan pot and build-out resistor and then burn it off, as resistive "heat," the 10 dB or so in the pan and the rest in th...

Re: VCA bus mixer using all THAT all the time

Thanks JR - I'm printing that pdf now so I can read it on real paper.

I haven't done the mental exercise, but wouldn't there be a modest benefit just in reduction in mix amp noise gain with say, 16 channels?
