Re: Limiters with FETs

Yup, the location recording matter is my interest.

Unfortunately I can only carry a guitar, can't play it...

Re: Limiters with optocouplers

A limiter is a life saver when an overload noise, voice or whatever, happens when you are shooting a movie or TV. I've heard many complaints of young TV audio "recordists' letting the audio clip all the time, and the limiter working too. That's not what I want, I want a tool designed for an eve...

Re: Limiters with FETs

The ultimate proof is listening to all this stuff.

For instance, I never tried a diode-based clipper or know how to design one. Being gentle with the waveform and having zero recovery time sounds very promising.

Where do you place it? Before the limiter?

Re: Limiters with optocouplers

THAT never mentioned that part to me, maybe because at first I was using V/2 and feeding 12-14v single, and then I moved to +/-12v. But the price being lower and current consumption less, would justify the trouble of adding a specific 5v supply for it. What did you use it for? A limiter? In the next...

Re: Limiters with optocouplers

Thanks for the tip on Mammoth: they are a bit less expensive than those from Newark.

A friend of mine told me that the place to get Vactrols is in China, for much lower prices.

I've opened another thread on FET limiters, as that seems to be an interesting type too.

Limiters with FETs

I have found three different versions for limiters using FETs.

1) The Urei 1176, schematic and all.

2) The Rodd Elliott FET limiter

3) Marshall Leach's limiter.

I'm particularly curious about the last two, because they use opamps.

Has anyone tried any of these or built one?

Re: Limiters with optocouplers

Has anyone seen a limiter built around this VCA?

Re: Limiters with optocouplers

I have seen Rolls 422. and I'm not so sure I like their Vactol limiter implementation.

The filter is very simple, and I think my proposals on the other thread on HP are a bit better.

Re: Voltage follower for high-pass

Hi Bill, This is not for the 1510 preamp, it's for a different design. On the 1510 I'm doing exactly as you said. You need an active stage afterwards, which in my case was the THAT limiter. So THAT support themselves helped me picked the cap values, because of the resistors before the limiter. Yes, ...

Re: Voltage follower for high-pass

This is a cleaner drawing of what the filter would be like.

Now I will have to pick a frequency to cut at.

Opinions are welcome, particularly if you are familiar with recording dialog on location.
