The author compares the efficiency of 555 timer inductorless converters to those based on the low-cost LM386 audio power amp.
The final figure shows a bipolar supply based on an LM386.

You'll have to ask him. I do see the word inductorless repeated.
You might be surprised to know that this is one of the site's consistent top 50 pdf downloads: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=426
And you'll be pleased to know that the circuits and old datasheets that raise your ire are usually the most popular.

There are off the shelf charge pump ICs to make slick PS... Some low voltage digital interface chips build in charge pumps to deliver required output voltage. ...mediatechnology wrote: ↑Mon Jan 14, 2019 3:01 pm You'll have to ask him. I do see the word inductorless repeated.
the 555 is an iconic chip... I used one as a junior tech back in the 70s to make a time base for a yogurt timer...(I fed the 555 clock to a cmos ripple counter to make a 12 hour timer). You might be surprised to know that this is one of the site's consistent top 50 pdf downloads: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=426
