Polyphenylene Sulphide Film Capacitor (SMD) in EQ filters

Post by vintagedesign »

Does anyone around here have experience of Polyphenylene Sulphide Film Capacitor (SMD) in EQ filters?

I don't recognize that dielectric. I recall over a decade ago trying to use some SMD film caps on a PCB for a DSP based product and contrary to their suggestion that they would survive processing, my contract manufacturer managed to melt them.. Some changed value, some died outright.

You should be able to source NPO/COG ceramic SMD caps that will be transparent for audio filters.

It looks like they have a very low dissipation factor, better than PET: http://www.wima.com/EN/tpl_products_smd_overview.htm

We used them at Crest and APB for the EQ circuits in our Consoles.
We used the Panasonic ECHU Series, but Cornell Dubilier also offers similar parts with their FCP Series.
Bought them mostly from DigiKey, used the 5% & 2% parts, depending on what was available.
Values we used ranged from 1N0 to 220N

Unlike JR, our CM didn't melt these during processing...
Never had any (overall ) problems with them, but you couldn't really use a soldering iron on them for repair.
They could handle the SMT reflow process fine, but you could easily melt them if you put an iron to them.

Thanx JohnP
Will try them in a prototype and make some listenings tests before I use them in production.
