If you use Linux, the "special characters" are automatically included in your fonts and are just a pair of key presses away:
µ = Alt Gr and the m key,
Ω = Alt Gr and Shift q.
Pretty much all of the commonly used symbols are available just as easily! ™ = Alt Gr Shift 8 and so on....
