We need low performance helper robots for all those jobs that don't require skill just another set of hands.

Re: DIY 3rd hand soldering tools
I have that same Keystone 9V clip...
I like the "robot arms" made from coolant hose that nescafe linked to.
I might actually order some as well.
When I worked at SSL I got to see a lot of people's shops and the primitive clip-lead thingys were very common.
About as popular were drilled wood blocks to accept XLRs, TRS and RCA plugs.
I never liked using the blocks since most were oriented vertically and I prefer to solder connectors horizontally.
I really don't miss the days of terminating cables and wiring DB-25s.
I've just always used a small Panavise or General Tools vise for connector soldering and have a PC-board soldering vise.
If I didn't have a printed circuit board vise I'd have to have the clip leads.
I can see the "robot arms" with being very useful for that - probably better than the PCB vise.

Re: DIY 3rd hand soldering tools
The battery base is a good idea, I think that will be heavy enough for base job. I really want some Panavise Jr, but hard to get here in my country, so DIY tools like that is really help. What I use now is widely available third hand that is very frustating to use
