Re: Limiters with optocouplers

At the risk of over-generalization FET, opto and other devices with highly non-linear control characteristics limit the designer to the feedback topology. I suppose noise gates might be the exception. IMHO the invention of the dB linear VCA opened the door to feed-forward dynamics processing. I did ...

Re: Limiters with FETs

Are we talking instantaneous overload protection or audiophile-quality limiting during capture committed to flash or disc? A diode clipper can be made to soft-clip as it approaches the clipping point and it will be less audible than the op amp, A/D or more often than not the limiter doing it for you...

Re: Limiters with FETs

For instance, I never tried a diode-based clipper or know how to design one. Being gentle with the waveform and having zero recovery time sounds very promising. Where do you place it? Before the limiter? The best place to put it, if possible, is in the mic preamp stage. If not possible to put it in...

Re: Limiters with optocouplers

I did a Guitar Compressor design for THAT using the 4316. I've also used it in a product in development now in the beta test stage. Both were 9V powered using an LM2950-5.0 sub-regulator. To simplify prototyping they have DIP adapters with the 4316 mounted. I'm assuming that you want a simple limite...

Re: Limiters with FETs

No, I haven't though of the last two Rod Elliot's circuit is something you could build and run with. Rod's designs always seem bullet-proof, well-tested and documented. If it were me I'd stick with a VCA in a predictable feed-forward configuration. For a limiter FETs are going to be THD/level-challe...

Re: Limiters with optocouplers

For lower cost and greater availability you might look at the THAT4316 vs. Vactrols or FETS. I know that you've discussed the THAT4305. I've used the 4316 and the unipolar 5V supply is not a limitation since the device is current-in/current-out. It's about half the price and uses about half the curr...

Re: 12 to 48V DC/DC Converter For Phantom Power

From the Rolls MX422 comes this phantom supply: https://www.ka-electronics.com/Images/jpg/Rolls_MX422_Phantom_Supply.jpg Rolls MX422 Phantom Supply The V+ connection is from the raw 12-16V battery feed. Vcc for the oscillator is a second pole on the phantom On/Off switch for each channel. The schema...

Re: Flat Phono Preamp Based on John's P10 and 2SK389

I wanted to share with everyone a flow diagram of the Flat Phono Preamp for transfer and DSP-based declicking. The design has RIAA EQ available for live monitoring of the transfer - or playback of the transfer- prior to final RIAA EQ being applied in software. Based on doing a few flat transfers an...
