Re: Spring Reverb Preemphasis

Ahhh, so the boing is not a problem of the spring being a bad delay line, just the opposite---it's still too "good" of a delay line, given that there are only 2-3 of them. That makes so much more sense. It's not that spring reverb goes boing because springs go boing, it's that springs go ...

Re: A Quadrature Power-Summed Compressor Sidechain For "The Uno Compressor"

I'll add that over time I find I'm using non-linear mode the most with Pico's in pop music, acoustic Americana, etc. I rarely ever use adjustable attack/release, it's NL or RMS. Never the peak mode. I think the waveulator is a better approach for transients. I agree. Using an "RMS" compre...

Re: Spring Reverb Preemphasis

Thanks for joining us 555x555. You might want to read through this thread: https://www.proaudiodesignforum.com/forum/php/viewtopic.php?t=213 Preemphasis with spring reverbs is often used to emulate constant-current drive to maintain an equal driving current vs. frequency into the highly-inductive lo...

Re: 9 Volt Battery End of Life Voltage

Thread from the past. I'll add to the dataset that 7.6V is the end-of-life voltage for a Zircon water leak detector. It reached end of life around 12:30 AM this morning and began beeping. I have about eight in the house - two in the kitchen. This one was behind a snap-on kick panel underneath the si...

Re: John Roberts' audio articles

10 uH is large enough to require a core, unless you like big air core coils; did you ever measure a noticeable increase in distortion when you guys used them? Are you referring to saturation from DC currents or signal? Joe had an AP and ran lots of tests on the circuit before he started using them ...

Re: A Quadrature Power-Summed Compressor Sidechain For "The Uno Compressor"

I did a quick video of the variable capacitance multiplier both without and with Quadrature Summation. Without the quadrature component ripple in the 50 Hz toneburst response can be seen with effective capacitance ranging from 2.2 to 22 uF for a log-domain tau of about 7.6 to 76 ms. When the quadrat...

Re: John Roberts' audio articles

It's 20 uH 22 Ohm min or 25K max and yes its 1.6 kHz but as I point out the Q is nada at both extremes. It introduces a nice HF gain rolloff. Joe Neil in Waynes mic pre used them IIRC at max gain the 3 dB point we used was around 80 kHz. I would have split the two inductors and placed each at their ...

Re: A Quadrature Power-Summed Compressor Sidechain For "The Uno Compressor"

Here are some tone burst oscillograms comparing ripple without and with the quadrature channel summed in. It's a few cycles of 50 Hz with a Ct of 2.2 µF and an It of 7.5 µA for a log-domain tau of 7.6 ms. Default dBx timing is around 35 ms so this is an example of the fast-response low ripple capabi...

Re: John Roberts' audio articles

Q = 0.009 with VR1 at 0Ω.
Q = 8.25E-6 at 25KΩ.

I've put inductors in Rg to rolloff RFI.

Re: A Quadrature Power-Summed Compressor Sidechain For "The Uno Compressor"

Interesting but is side chain signal rectification the significant audible concern in side chains? https://groupdiy.com/threads/that2180-vca-based-compressor-90deg-detector-filter.81970/ https://groupdiy.com/threads/some-ideas-for-compressor-side-chains.52305/#post-666719 I thought I recalled Jakob...
