Re: Gentle persuasion over time

Steel cables when they snap are deadly because of a devastating whip effect. A lot of stored energy sudden release. Snapping ropes, could hurt too. Straps are elastic but quite safe. I have seen pros using some special tow strap that pulls smoothly with a built in trick to take slack back. Towing wi...

Re: Gentle persuasion over time

To get unstuck from mud, I had success with a tarp that happened to be abandoned there.
Raising the stuck wheel to fit the tarp under, then backing in the same wheel tracks. Going gently the wheel did not dig deeper.
A messy crummy tarp can save the day.

Re: Gentle persuasion over time

A two tons "come along" is a handy tool. I have used it to pull out my boat at places with terrible boat launches if any. Some 1200 pounds with it's trailer to drag out of sand and mud. For long reaches, I use a steel cable with much care, because in case it breaks it is deadly. A chain is safe. Oth...

Re: Gentle persuasion over time

From my limited experience at cutting down trees. They mostly fall the way they want to. Ropes to persuade them to fall another side is likely bound to failure. It all depends of the side they have more weight and the side they lean too. This must be carefully inspected. Dangerous ones are those whe...

Re: New: A Direct-Coupled Input-Capacitorless Active Mic Preamp

Calibration to take care of Vbe mismatch. I understand, it would be nice to have it automatic, transparent to the user. However you want the system to calibrate when all has been set and temperature stable and you do not want the system to go into calibration while recording. I doubt it can be user ...

Re: New: A Direct-Coupled Input-Capacitorless Active Mic Preamp

Funny JR I was thinking of DPOTs too and having the DPOTs trim the input error as closely as possible and then, once trimmed, not reactivate until the input error grew outside a predefined window. A calibration procedure ? Initiated by the user and a warning led to tell when out of window. I thought...

Re: Engineering malpractice

Changing the anode. Can't you just destroy the old one and fit a new one someplace, all it needs is electric contact with the tank's metal. I think any chunk of zinc is a good enough anode. I know of a heather that blew up because of the pressure relief valve. The manual, from a new heather, the ver...

Re: VCA Multiplying DAC.

You mentioned that the THD specs for the DAC8812 weren't specified for operation at reference levels >5V. That may be because Vcc max is 5V and though the maximum for the reference is +/-18V the distortion performance of the FET(?) switches probably degrade rapidly. It is unlikely the gates are boo...

Re: VCA Multiplying DAC.

I was afraid of such a limitation from the FET switches control voltage. It's even worse, their 0.0005% thd spec is at 5V peak TO PEAK. So the AD5545 may be better since this one mentions being AC able for Vref +12 V -12 V. May be not, that is 24Vpp able, but they don't give a thd figure at this lev...

Re: VCA Multiplying DAC.

I need at least: +30dB -10dB gain range and 50 KHz a bandwidth.
